Cities and municipalities across the country are embracing BAS technology. As a result, challenges turn into success stories, thanks to energy savings, cost reductions, and prudent governance.
In South Central Texas, Bexar County was struggling with high energy costs and outdated systems in their buildings. A small project at the Vista Verde Plaza administration building became their test bed for BAS technology. The goal was to save energy and make the building more comfortable.
The county teamed up with a leading facilities services company to install a web-based BAS system. The system adjusted HVAC schedules, managed temperatures, and stopped the building’s chiller from running 24 hours a day.
The results were impressive: energy use dropped by 25.4%, saving Bexar County $109,510 in just 18 months. Even better, the project paid for itself in only two months. With better air quality and temperature control, the county decided to use the system in other buildings, including their central plant.
In Kansas, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency used BAS technology to create a model for sustainability. At their Science & Technology Center, a powerful integrated BAS platform managed single-pass ventilation, rainwater recovery systems, and other green technologies.
The system reduced energy use by 24%, compared to standard labs, earning the facility LEED Gold certification. It became the top-performing new EPA lab in the nation, exceeding all efficiency goals while providing operators with a user-friendly interface for complete control.
